Bend’s Newest Cold Brew Infused with CBD, Functional Mushrooms

Cold brew coffee just got better in Central Oregon. Altitude Beverages makes canned cold brew infused with adaptogens like CBD and functional mushrooms. And, using oat milk for creaminess and agave nectar as a sweetener, Altitude Beverages’ Everything Latté has everything you need for your morning coffee. But, if CBD coffee or mushroom coffee has you scratching your head, keep reading.

Altitude Functional Beverages introduces Everything Latté

A “better” latté: that’s how Altitutude Beverage likes to define their Everything Latté. If you’re one of the 150 million coffee drinkers in America, you know the importance of a quality product.

For those of you who like to incorporate adaptogen powders into your morning routine, it can be frustrating to find these supplements separating themselves from your morning brew.

Because adaptogens like CBD and functional mushrooms offer incredible health benefits— like mental clarity—many people prefer to find an easier way to integrate these into their morning routines (like adding them to coffee).

Thomas Angel and his wife Laura Melgarejo Silva were two of these people. After discovering and experiencing the benefits of incorporating adaptogens into their morning routine, they stumbled upon a new problem: staying consistent.

Naturally, adding CBD tinctures or functional mushrooms in powder form to liquids was the solution. However, they found that these products didn’t completely emulsify or left a “natural” aftertaste with each sip.

So, they started adding these adaptogens to their morning coffee. “It made us feel focused, alert, and ready to take on the day,” says Angel, “thus was born the Everything Latte.”

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are the most popular class of herbal supplements. They’re said to help the body “adapt” by balancing out stress, which can come from physical or mental exertion. Notably, adaptogens aren’t technically considered stimulants—they don’t increase your heart rate, blood pressure, or metabolic rate (like caffeine does).

Instead, they help your body stay balanced after you’ve been stressed out. When we get stressed out from everyday life and exercise, our adrenal glands secrete more adrenaline hormones like cortisol and epinephrine.

Consequently, these hormones activate our nervous system and cause us to feel alert for a short period; this is how we get that burst of energy when we need to finish up an important project at work before leaving in five minutes or less.

Unfortunately, this is only good for short bursts of energy; if your adrenals are constantly working overtime daily because you’re always feeling stressed due to work deadlines or family issues, it can take its toll on your overall health over time.

What is CBD?

If you’re unfamiliar with CBD, it is the second most common cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. Unlike THC, which is psychoactive and gives you that pleasant high feeling when you consume marijuana, CBD has no intoxicating effects and can be used to treat many health conditions.

While many different types of hemp oil and products on the market contain CBD, the hemp CBD used in Altitude Beverages’ canned drinks contains 0% THC and is used for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Canned functional beverages

Angel and Melgarejo Silva experimented with many variations of adaptogens and sweeteners. Ultimately, they discovered the winning combination of functional add-ins for their morning cold brew:

  • Hemp CBD
  • Chaga mushroom
  • Reishi mushroom
  • Cordyceps
  • Lion’s Mane mushroom
  • Turmeric
  • Cocoa powder
  • Cinnamon
  • Sea Salt
Everything Latté offers ready-to-drink cold brew with the benefits of CBD and adaptogens.

Don’t worry, there aren’t actual mushrooms in this coffee. Rather, they’re extracts in powder form that stay completely emulsified in the cold brew.

Additionally, the Everything Latté contains oat milk and agave nectar. Angel explains why they chose oat milk over other dairy alternatives:

“Oat milk is considered to be one of the most, if not the most, all-around sustainable dairy alternatives when comparing carbon emission, land usage, and water usage compared to cow milk. It uses 80 percent less land and 80 percent fewer emissions than dairy farms. Also, oats are a cover crop, so they can be grown in the winter and used on plots of land that would otherwise be fallow. It is also one of the most nutrient-dense dairy alternatives.”

More than coffee

After launching the Everything Latté, Altitude went on to develop more functional beverages beyond cold brew. Most recently, they introduced two new Everything Lattés including Nitro Matcha Green Tea and Nitro Chai. Similarly, the newest latté products contain 30 milligrams of hemp CBD and mushroom extracts.

Further, they recently launched their alcohol-alternative sparkling white tea mocktails. As a part of the “Sunset Vibes” lines, these mocktails have a functional blend of adaptogens along with GABA and L-Theanine for a natural relaxing effect without the alcohol.

Currently, there are three flavors to choose from:

  • Blue Hawaiian — pineapple and curacao, naturally colored with spirulina
  • Mountain Mule — spicy ginger and lime with hints of mint
  • Paloma — sweet and tart pink grapefruit with basil

Why drink CBD coffee?

According to Angel, there are two primary reasons to drink CBD-infused coffee:

  1. Routine. CBD, like all functionals, needs to be taken consistently to realize the benefits. Since coffee is the most regularly consumed beverage (second only to water) in the US, it enables people to stay consistent.
  2. Supports Anti-Inflammation. Altitude Beverages uses a CBD isolate instead of a broad or full spectrum CBD extract. This is to avoid the relaxing effects of the other cannabinoids (like CBN and THC) and focus on the anti-inflammatory support of CBD.

Altitude Beverages sources its hemp CBD from SoRSE Technologies out of Seattle. “They enable us to have complete confidence in the quality of the CBD in addition to the emulsion being flavorless, odorless, and water-soluble,” Angel shares. “We provide a QR on each of our cans that links to a third-party analysis of our CBD post-production by GreenLeaf Labs in Portland.”

Additionally, Altitude Beverages sources quality coffee from a small-lot collective in Jamundi, Colombia. The beans are grown using organic practices, and Altitude has a direct trade relationship with the farm.

“Our roasting partner is located two hours from our production facility, so we aim for a 96-hour window from roast to grind to brew to production, making our cold brew unbeatable in freshness for a ready-to-drink option,” Angel says.

I wanted to share more than where to eat, but what to eat. And not just what, but why? From where is the food resourced? Should it be paired with a beer, or a cocktail—and what kind? But most importantly, share the faces and tell the stories behind the people who make it all happen, showing support for small business in and around Bend.
