The much-anticipated Bend Brewfest, which was set to return to the Hayden Homes Amphitheater this October for the first time since 2019, has been canceled. Organizers made the difficult announcement on Monday afternoon, citing insurmountable challenges in restoring the festival to its original splendor. This iconic craft beer festival has been a staple in the community since its inception in 2003.

Refunds for Festivalgoers and Breweries

For those who eagerly purchased mug and token packages, rest assured that you will receive a full and automatic refund. Similarly, breweries that had already paid deposits to participate in the festival will also be fully refunded.

A Major Disappointment for the Community

“It’s a heartbreaking decision,” said Beau Eastes, marketing director for the Old Mill District and Hayden Homes Amphitheater. The two organizations are behind Bend Brewfest.

“Supporting the craft beer industry over the years has been a major point of pride for us. We really wanted to bring Brewfest back in all its glory. Unfortunately, to be able to put on the festival to our standards, there were just too many hurdles.”

The History of Bend Brewfest

Founded in 2003, Bend Brewfest was a beloved annual event held every August at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater until 2019. However, the festival was put on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, a smaller, two-day version of the event was held on the east side of the Deschutes River in the Old Mill District. Last year, organizers postponed the event with the aim of returning to the amphitheater in 2024.

The Future of Bend Brewfest: Is This the End?

“This isn’t a decision we take lightly,” Eastes said. “We’ve put a significant amount of time and resources into trying to resurrect Brewfest following the pandemic. At this point in time, though, it’s just not feasible.”

Despite the setback, organizers remain hopeful that Brewfest, which has raised over $150,000 for local non-profits since its inception, will return in some form in the future.

“We love this event. It’s something we’ve been honored to host over the past 20-plus years,” Eastes said. “And we’ll do everything in our power to see that it comes back in a safe, stable, and sustainable form.”

I wanted to share more than where to eat, but what to eat. And not just what, but why? From where is the food resourced? Should it be paired with a beer, or a cocktail—and what kind? But most importantly, share the faces and tell the stories behind the people who make it all happen, showing support for small business in and around Bend.
